Frequently
Asked Questions
Q. What would I do if a loved one were to die away from home?
A. The Plan provides quality service, 24 hours a day through an
international network of cooperating mortuaries. Your Membership
Identification Card carried in your wallet instructs law
enforcement/coroner and medical personnel to notify Sunset Plan
immediately.
Q. How Does the Plan Work?
A. Since all necessary legal forms and detailed instructions have
been
completed in advance by the member, Sunset Plan is able to respond
immediately upon notification of death (24 hours a day). The Decedent is
immediately transported to licensed private mortuary holding facilities.
Once the death certificate has been signed by the attending physician or
coroner, a county permit is issued by the health department allowing the
particular arrangements to proceed.
Q. Who has the Legal Right to Make Arrangements for Burial or
Cremation?
A. The California Health and Safety Code lists the persons who have
the right to make decisions about disposition arrangements after an
individual's death unless other written instructions are left (i.e. Sunset Plan
Membership Registration):
(1) an attorney-in-fact under a
durable power of attorney for health care, (2) spouse, (3) adult
children, (4) parents, and (5) other surviving competent adult kin. Upon
completion of Sunset Plan Membership Registration, be sure to provide
copies of your instructions to family members and keep your own copy in
a handy place.
